Dinan Product Packaging

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In early 2016 Dinan was fully enveloped in a drastic change in its distribution model with a shifting away from the core dealership base and instead beginning to focus on the direct to consumer and e-Tailer markets. This presented a new challenge as up until then packaging was an afterthought and brown boxes were king as the end user rarely ever saw the product before it was installed. In these new arenas however, presentation was very important and with the first major product launch that was specifically geared towards those markets just about to finish development packaging needed to be addressed.

With time to implement, ease of use, and a cheap per unit cost being the primary factors in design I was tasked to find an immediate solution. Since the product was an inexpensive one that would be a volume seller it was abundantly clear that in the long term a possibility of a need for a retail package was a distinct possibility. A plastic clamshell seemed like an obvious choice as there were numerous stock clamshell manufacturers around that had a multitude of sizes and shapes to choose from. The cases were cheap, could be sourced very quickly, and could easily be implemented as retail packaging hanging from a peg hook. The next step was designing the insert or labelling for the packaging itself. Since Dinan was doing the packaging in house something that did not require much labor nor time was desired above all else. Stickers or wraps were a possibility but required extra labor that limited production capability so instead a simple scored flat insert was developed that simply molded into the base of the plastic mold without any adhesives or special alignments.

Seeing as how there were to be numerous inserts for the various applications a general layout in design was adopted that only had a few select changing parts; the brief general application description along the top of the face of the packaging, the advertised power gains on the reverse of the packaging as well as the silhouette of the applicable brand of car. In this way new inserts, as they were needed, could be quickly instituted and never the reason for a delay into the market with a new release.
