After a long hiatus from the trade show scene by previous management of Dinan it was decided shortly after my arrival at Dinan that the company needed to be present at those industry functions going forward. While Dinan had been active in trade shows at one time it had been over a decade and all available material was significantly dated and essentially unusable. With the biggest automotive aftermarket trade show in the world, the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Convention, a few months away and our goal to make a splash there it meant a lot of work was ahead.
In order to to save as much time and money as humanly possible I set out with attempting to utilize an old display we had on hand which amounted to “warped” wall. It was stripped down to its base structure, expanded, updated (lighting), and re-skinned which saved a significant amount of cost in comparison to purchasing a new display. It also cut out 2 months of build time, which for my purposes in the matter, was more important. While it started out as a basic “wall” it was obvious the superstructure needed to be a expanded/larger but going into this fresh I wanted to retain an open nature to the display. This was so it could remain versatile for years to come in a variety of spaces as well as be easily refreshed in the graphics end of it every couple of years. The most cost effective solution that was derived was to extend one of the walls and create an open “hangar” which would be perfect for showcasing a single car under this canopy while leaving the other side free for another car or any number of other ideas as it was simply a backdrop.
With a constantly changing industry Dinan needed to have the flexibility to be able to update the graphics every year or every few years so pillowcase graphics that wrap around the superstructure were used. These could be easily made while leaving the superstructure intact with no modifications. The initial graphics I wanted to still be somewhat universal and be re-used to further save resources in the future. The top graphics were made to be relatively neutral and simply highlight the name/logo and the general product lines themselves to satiate that desire. The bottom graphics were then made to highlight the specific vehicles that were to be presented in front of those canvases.
The structure has remained unaltered for 2 years and is only now undergoing a graphic change as Dinan embarks on a Euro centric business plan instead of a BMW specific one which were the highlights of the first generation of graphics. The plan is to retain the versatile “hangar” structure for years to come and simply update graphics and perhaps when the need is presented to expand it to multiple “hangars”.
